Adam Miller

Large as life

Drawing from what he sees around him Adam Miller works to portray the figure in an emotionally charged light.
" I am inspired by what's right in front of me, but I am trying to go beyond that using light, the gesture of the model and the color to give you a feeling of what's really significant about what you're seeing," says Miller.      "I want to create empathy between who the viewer is seeing in the painting and themselves. This way I can bridge the gap between the model and how the viewer is feeling."
Many of the new works at The Art Bar feature Miller's girlfriend, Alexandra, as the model, in areas surrounding his home in Brooklyn, New York.
" I've set Alexandra in a variety of settings and costumes in scenes I've created from life around me. One is from the roof of the building I'm in with the view overlooking Brooklyn," says Miller. "These works are more based on my direct reality around me than my paintings of the past. I'm going a little deeper into exploring where I live, people I'm around, and I am trying to find the bigger theme about what's going on here."
Miller, who works in oils, prefers painting in a large format, with some pieces in this show reaching up to 6x4 feet in size.
"I like the figure to be as close to life-size as possible. You get more of an emotional response to it, it becomes more real," says Miller. "They tend to have a very visceral, powerful impact. They're larger, so they also tend to have a strong light and color, and the large figures are shown in some kind of motion. They're not understated they're large powerful paintings."
