Approaching contemporary themes with classical painting styles, Adam Miller (who is featured in our current issue) and Richard T. Scott currently have a two-person show at Last Rites Gallery in New York titled “Effigies and Idols” alongside Santiago Caruso’s “Ars Obscura” (covered here.) Masterfully rendering the human body, Miller creates delicate, emotionally poignant-scenes that evoke Romanticism and science fiction alike. The artist explores mankind’s sense of invincibility and foresees a future where the detrimental environmental impact of technology leads to disaster. Richard T. Scott’s works, on the other hand, cultivate a sense of foreboding with their obsessive focus on dead fowls. Referencing 19th-century portraiture, Scott takes us into a haunted microcosm plagued by death and loss. Take a look at some of the works in the show below, images courtesy of Last Rites Gallery, and check out “Effigies and Idols” before it closes on April 6.
